Ever since Phase 4 was announced people have been trying to predict a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, especially since it originally would’ve been one of the movies to kick off Phase 4 prior to the whole James Gunn situation. Now, James Gunn is in post-production on The Suicide Squad, which is coming out next August. That means it’s going to be a while until the third Guardians even begins filming.
This week AMC theaters mistakingly thought Guardians 3 would be coming out next year, and Gunn corrected them on Twitter as they aren’t filming yet and probably won’t be for a while. Of course everyone then thought he meant 2022, and he said he didn’t say it’d be 2022 either:
I didn’t say 2022.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) May 26, 2020
2022 is already staked out pretty well. We have Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and an untitled movie filling in those dates and October doesn’t really fit well for Guardians; especially after the last movie was given the prime May release date. Gunn is also going to be in post-production and editing The Suicide Squad for a while, meaning the third Guardians likely won’t begin filming until sometime in the second half of 2021.
That means it’s starting to look possible that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is going to get the May 5, 2023 date. Which would be three years after it originally was going to come out.
