This morning Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Jared Leto’s Morbius, and it includes an Easter Egg referencing Peter Parker being framed as a murderer at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as a surprise stinger at the end of the trailer.
The reference is the first thing we’ve seen in a Sony Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC) movie following the new Sony-Disney joint custody deal for Spider-Man. That new agreement was reported to allow Sony to Reference MCU events related to Spider-Man in their movies, and this trailer confirms those reports.
And no, despite what some people online want to believe; this isn’t set in the Raimi universe nor is it hinting at a return of Tobey as Spider-Man. Even though it’s using an image from the PlayStation 4 Spider-Man game of the Raimi suit, it’s a reference to the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and it won’t be the only reference in Morbius.
Morbius is just the first in what will probably be many nods to the MCU in the SUMC. We’ve heard that Sony is in talks with Tom Holland for a cameo in Venom 2 (which releases in October), and then of course Sony plans to have Holland and Hardy face off in a future Venom movie. But this is the price fans need to pay in order to have Spider-Man in the MCU, and it’s really one I think most are OK with.
