Who is Awkwafina Playing in Shang-Chi?

Last month at San Diego Comic Con, we learned of three official cast members for Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings, but only two of them had roles named. As everyone knows; Simu Liu is Shang-Chi, the legendary Tony Leung is The Mandarin, and Awkwafina’s role wasn’t revealed. But there’s some evidence out there that strongly hints at who she could be playing.

Prior to San Diego Comic Con, there were three roles being cast for Shang-Chi: The title character, a leader of a country who was obviously The Mandarin, and a third female character described as a loyal soldier to the Mandarin character.

In the comics, Shang-Chi was the son of Fu-Manchu; and that’s obviously not going to be the case in the movie. If they’re replacing Fu-Manchu with The Mandarin, then this loyal soldier to the Mandarin would most likely be Fah Lo Suee.

The comic book version of Fah Lo Suee was the daughter of Fu-Manchu who was at odds with her brother Shang-Chi. The casting that was out there prior to SDCC really makes the mystery female role sound like it’s Fah Lo Suee… if The Mandarin is indeed taking the place of Fu-Manchu. That means if they make Shang-Chi the son of The Mandarin, instead of Fu-Manchu, then Fah Lo Suee would also be his sister like in the comics.

So to recap, we have three people officially cast in Shang-Chi. There were three roles being cast just prior to SDCC. Two of those were named at the convention (Shang-Chi and The Mandarin), and the third was a female role that matches the character of Fah Lo Suee from the comics. As Awkwafina’s role wasn’t named at SDCC, but there was that role being cast at the same time as the other two, it seems extremely likely that she could be playing Fah Lo Suee.

At the same time, yesterday HN Entertainment reported that a version of Clive Reston would also appear in the movie. With Clive Reston in the movie, and there’s no reason to think he isn’t, then Leiko Wu is very likely to appear as well as an ally to both Reston and Shang-Chi. However, the casting for the female character didn’t match Leiko Wu as she was never really a loyal soldier to the villain. I know a lot of people were speculating that Awkwafina could be Leiko Wu, but right now that doesn’t match the casting that was out there prior to SDCC.

With only three people officially cast in Shang-Chi: The Legend of Ten Rings, there are going to be a lot more announcements of people joining the cast as the movie approaches its production start in a few months. There are a lot more surprises to come with the movie, some of which might be pretty big…and green.
