It’s funny how it was only a couple of weeks ago people the Internet were proclaiming King Cameron’s throne to never be toppled and that Avengers: Endgame would not pass Avatar‘s all time box office record. What these people didn’t seem to understand was that the Avengers: Endgame re-release was not a simultaneous worldwide release.
Since the US return to theaters, there has been a staggered re-issue around the world, with this past weekend seeing a big group of countries seeing the movie back in their local theaters. Following this weekend, the movie is just under $8 million from passing Avatar‘s all-time record:
What does this mean? It’s now inevitable that the movie will pass Avatar given that there are still some countries who have yet to see the reissue and will do so over the next month.
Also, time is on its side. Disney did not end the theatrical run of Avengers: Infinity War until September 13, 2018. That means Avengers: Endgame still has two months to make up that $8 million, but it probably won’t take that long. With the international re-issues taking place, there’s a very good chance it could happen within the next two weeks, before the end of July.
