When Captain Marvel released and people saw that the Skrulls in the MCU aren’t the evil infiltrators they’ve been known as in the comics, some Marvel fans worried that it meant that the popular “Secret Invasion” comic storyline wouldn’t be possible in the MCU.
While Spider-Man: Far From Home ends Phase 3 of the MCU, there are some interesting hints at the future in the movie, and one line in the film hints that they could be setting up a very different Secret Invasion in the MCU than what you expect.
At one point in the movie, Nick Fury is talking to Maria Hill and he mentions Kree sleeper cells being classified information.
Captain Marvel introduced the “pale” Kree from the comics into the MCU. Prior to that movie, we’d only seen the blue Kree. But just like in the comics, there are Kree now in the MCU who can pass for humans; which Captain Marvel established with Mar-Vell.
Marvel has commented on Secret Invasion in the past. When Captain Marvel was releasing, producer Jonathan Schwartz told Collider, “Yes, we talked about Secret Invasion. I wouldn’t go into this movie saying, ‘Which one of these superheroes is a Skrull?’ Because Carol is more or less the first superhero to show up on Earth. But are we planting seeds for future movies? Always.”
That mention of Kree sleeper cells in Far From Home was something very interesting to include in the movie. It could just be another hint to is revealed in the post-credits scene. Or it could be a breadcrumb that was deliberately put in the movie to set up a MCU version of Secret Invasion where instead of the Skrulls infiltrating Earth; it’s the Kree.
