James Gunn Says Guardians 3 Will Complete Rocket’s Arc

Now that James Gunn has returned to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he’s opening up about the saga of his firing and rehiring and as a result we got a little nugget of information about what the movie’s story will deal with.

Gunn gave a long interview to Deadline today about his firing from Disney and coming back, and in it he touched on what Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will deal with in terms of Rocket Raccon’s arc, “When you asked me what was saddest for me when I thought it was gone—and anybody at Marvel can tell you—it’s this very strange and attached relationship to Rocket. Rocket is me, he really is, even if that sounds narcissistic. Groot is like my dog. I love Groot in a completely different way. I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.”

There have been recent rumors that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will introduce Lylla as a love interest for Rocket. Those who paid attention during the “mug shot” scene in the first Guardians will remember that Lylla was listed as an acquaintance of Rocket. But James Gunn did say back in 2017 that there was something in that scene he wanted to change, “Those things are something that your average viewer doesn’t see at all,” he said. “But there’s a lot of background I put into those things about who they’ve worked with, where they are from, what’s going on. And it’s one of those things that I’m thinking about changing.” Perhaps including Lylla there is that thing so she could be a surprise in Guardians 3, if that rumor is true?

I really hope there aren’t some Twitter stan accounts out there who have an arc for Rocket made up in their minds, because things will get ugly if so just like it has with the Captain America ending in Avengers: Endgame
