As of 12:02am Eastern time this morning, the Disney-Fox deal is complete and all of those Marvel characters held by Fox are back home. While many sites and people on the internet have images of X-Men dancing through Avengers: Endgame in their head, a new report out says we won’t see any of the new characters in the MCU until at least 2021 and it could be later than that.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, not only does Marvel Studios have six movies in the pipeline before any X-Men of Fantastic Four movie, there are complicated issues to work out with the integration:
“The X-Men films date back to 2000’s X-Men, and there are producer deals that will need to be looked at and either untangled or bought out, say sources. Lauren Shuler Donner, who championed the 2000 film and has been a producer on all Fox’s mutant-centric movies, is said to have a deal that calls for her to receive an executive producer credit on any X-Men movie whether she is actively involved or not. Kinberg may have a similar deal.”
THR also goes on to confirm that Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool will be the only iteration of X-Men from Fox moving over to Marvel Studios, after all he’s on the Walt Disney Company website already.
Of course this won’t stop people from trying to spread their claims that the X-Men will pop up in Avengers: Endgame. One major comic book site was telling other bloggers in private over the last six months that the Dark Phoenix cast was secretly filmed in Endgame “just in case” the deal closed early, which of course is something that wasn’t legally able to take place.
