To the dismay of trolls and YouTubers everywhere, a true audience metric has arrived to blow up their narrative that 2/3rds of the audience hates Captain Marvel. While YouTubers point to the RottenTomatoes audience score that they created by botting and review bombing it, CinemaScore has come out with their rating, and Captain Marvel has earned an “A”.
How does CinemaScore determine this? They explain it right on their website:
“On opening night around the country, CinemaScore polls moviegoers for their opinions on new movie releases. Audience members fill out ballot cards right at the theatre, grading a movie A to F and providing demographic information. CinemaScore uses this direct balloting approach to establish a movie’s grade—its overall “CinemaScore.””
This means the CinemaScore is the only audience metric that can’t be manipulated by trolls. It’s also one of the big factors that determines how a movie will perform at the box office, as a good CinemaScore translates into strong word of mouth about a movie. Which is why Captain Marvel is headed towards a $160 million opening!
In terms of how Captain Marvel compares to previous MCU movies, it’s rare for a MCU movie to drop too low. Ant-Man and The Wasp earned an A-, Avengers: Infinity War an A, Black Panther a very rare A+, and both Thor Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 were As.
