Captain Marvel is hitting theaters around the world this week and now that it’s open in some international countries, there are some people wondering about certain plot elements that are clearly established in past Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. So to be completely up to speed with what you need to know going into Captain Marvel, these are the MCU movies you really should try to re-watch before heading to the theater. Don’t worry, there’s two of them to see.
Guardians of the Galaxy
The original Guardians of the Galaxy introduces the Kree to the MCU, and they’re a huge part of Captain Marvel. Also the characters of Korath and Ronan the Accuser are big parts of Guardians, and you’ll see younger versions of them in Captain Marvel.
The first Avengers movie is pretty key to a big part of Captain Marvel. In the 2012 movie, it establishes that “Project Pegasus” was a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. operation studying and making “Phase 2” weapons from the Tesseract. There have been a lot of people confused about what Project Pegasus is, and a re-watch of The Avengers would refresh that memory of it being a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. side-project. There are other cool tie-is with The Avengers in Captain Marvel, but I won’t spoil those here.
So unlike Infinity War, which does need a bunch of movies to be up to speed, those are really the only two that are really helpful to see prior to seeing Captain Marvel. They’re not required, but you’ll understand a the connective tissue a little better if you go into it familiar with those two.
