Recently a rumor came out that said that Marvel was considering making Black Widow the first R-rated movie they release. At first that didn’t make much sense, with its rumored release date being the traditional May, but now a source that many consider to be reliable says it’s going to happen.
According to the Crazy Days and Nights blog run by EntyLawyer, a blind item that they posted earlier in the month is in fact an R-rated Black Widow movie. They describe it as an experiment that could go horribly wrong, meaning it may be a decision that has already been made.
For those of you who are surprised by Marvel doing an R-rated movie; don’t be. Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed that very thing when they were originally talking about the Fox purchase and Deadpool:
“We think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool, as long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.”
Marvel has similar brands in the comics, Marvel MAX was a definitively “hard-R” brand for the comics while Marvel Knights was similar to the content in the Netflix shows. Marvel could adapt something similar for an R-Rated Black Widow film, if this does end up happening.
