One question that Marvel fans are still asking is why there hasn’t been a home release of Avengers: Infinity War in the IMAX aspect ratio. Past MCU movies that supported IMAX ratios had the larger format scenes included on the 3D Blu-Ray release, but Infinity War didn’t. At the recent Collider Q&A for Avengers: Infinity War, the Russo Brothers were asked about that, and they said it was an IMAX decision and to basically as them. Now there’s a clue about what was driving that decision.
Variety has an announcement today that FandangoNOW’s online streaming service will exclusively offer IMAX versions of movies soon. The first movies will be Sony’s Venom and Alpha along with IMAX documentaries, with Paramount movies following later in the year. The IMAX versions of the movies will be separate purchases at the same price as a 4K UHD movie.
Disney isn’t listed as a studio participating…yet. But if this is an exclusive IMAX deal Fandango managed to get, it would explain why the IMAX version of Infinity War was not released on home video, as these sort of things take time to complete. If there is to be a home release of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame; Fandango’s exclusive IMAX movies would probably be where they’ll end up.
