IMAX and Marvel made a pretty big deal about Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 being filmed at the full IMAX aspect ratio, and most other recent Marvel Studios films have had at least some IMAX enhancements; such as Ant-Man and The Wasp. Now it’s Sony’s turn for the IMAX treatment, which means Spider-Man: Far From Home will be digitally remastered for the IMAX format.
Today The Hollywood Reporter revealed a new deal between Sony and IMAX and they specifically mention the Spider-Man sequel as a movie to benefit from it:
Under the agreement, Imax screens will be part of Sony’s release strategy for Spider-Man: Far From Home starring Tom Holland, set for a July 5, 2019, release; the upcoming Men in Black spinoff out June 14, 2019; and the sequel to the 2017 hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, out Dec. 13, 2019.
While the article mentions scenes shot with IMAX cameras, it’s not clear if anything like that was done on Far From Home. It’s possible the movie will just receive the “standard” DMR process to upscale the movie to play on IMAX screens, without any scenes filling the full aspect ratio.
