With Venom opening next weekend, the marketing machine is going full steam ahead and that includes bizarre ads such as this one.
Spoofing personal assistants like Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home, the ad positions “The Venom” symbiote as a new in-house assistant:

Parts of it are funny, but this is the sort of thing that’s really a waste of money. Ads like this is why the marketing for Amazing Spider-Man 2 was so high, and in the end that movie actually lost money (according to the Sony emails that came out).
We’ll know how Venom does about a week from now. Social media impressions come out on Monday, while reviews are still embargoed until right before it hits theaters.
