This morning 20th Century Fox pushed Alita: Battle Angel out of the December 21 bloodbath to a new February 14 release date. Which was the original release date of Dark Phoenix, which will now open on June 7th. In the place of Alita they put an “Untitled Deadpool Movie” for December 21 of this year. While this is shocking and confusing, there’s a simple explanation for it.
According to Deadline, this Deadpool movie is a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2:
“Fox is releasing, what we hear, is a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 on Dec. 21. They’ve listed it as untitled Deadpool movie.”
They PG-13 Deadpool 2 could be ultimately intended for China. It wasn’t approved for release there in the R-rated version due to “graphic content”. Cutting it down to PG-13 in the US could earn it a release in China. The first release of Deadpool 2 didn’t make as much as the first movie at the box office, and a China release (with a PG-13 cut) could put it over the original in the end.
