Yesterday was a pretty big day for Captain Marvel news. We got the first look at the costume, some plot information, and ten photos of the movie all from Entertainment Weekly. But the magazine isn’t slowing down, as today they’ve posted an interview with Jude Law about his character in the movie. While Marvel declined to name him, it’s been pretty well known for a while that he’s likely playing Mar-Vell in the film.
They confirm that Mar-Vell will be Carol’s mentor in the movie, teaching her how to cope with her powers:
“These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control,” Law says. “That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”
And Brie Larson talked about their relationship:
“There’s a lot and back and forth that comes with the two of them, which kind of creates a little bit of tension with the rest of Starforce,” Larson adds. “Like, ‘Why do they have a special relationship, and why isn’t it me?’”
In the comics, Carol Danvers received her Kree DNA and powers through an accident with Mar-Vell. The writers of the movie said they will be altering that origin as it’s so similar to Hal Jordan’s in Green Lantern, so we’ll just have to wait and see how the MCU Carol Danvers became half-Kree.
