Captain Marvel’s MCU Origin Will Not Mirror the Comic’s ‘Green Lantern’ Version

Marvel Studios' CAPTAIN MARVEL L to R: Leader of Starforce (Jude Law), Ronan (Lee Pace), Korath (Djimon Hounsou), Att-Lass (Algenis Perez Soto), Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Bron-Char (Rune Temte) and Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan)

With all of the Captain Marvel news today, such as the plot information and the photos, there are a lot of snarky people online who think they’re funny by pointing out how the movie “rips off” DC’s Green Lantern. Except, they’re basing that joke on the origin of Captain Marvel in the comics, which is very much like Green Lantern. Their joke falls apart when discussing the MCU version of the origin, as Marvel has said for years that they were changing her origin to specifically not be like Green Lantern.

Back in August of 2016, Captain Marvel co-writer and the person responsible for Guardians of the Galaxy being greenlit, Nicole Perlman was on a podcast where she explained they were specifically reinventing Carol’s MCU origin to avoid it from being a retelling of Green Lantern’s. ScreenRant has a transcription of her comments:

“But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. “

The next time you see someone on social media trying to attack Captain Marvel as a “Green Lantern rip-off”, just point them to those comments by one of the people responsible for writing the movie where they explain how the movie is going to feature a reinvented origin for Carol Danvers in the MCU.
