Those waiting for a release of the IMAX version of Avengers: Infinity War will probably be disappointed as even the 3D Blu-ray release does not contain the movie in the expanded aspect ratio.
The standard Blu-ray and 4K UHD version that his stores last month in the US obviously did not include the IMAX version, but there was hope that the 3D version that was due in the UK would. In the past the 3D Blu-ray releases such as Captain America: Civil War and most recently Black Panther did include the IMAX scenes. The Avengers: Infinity War 3D Blu-ray packaging did not make note of the IMAX aspect ratio, but people had hope that it was simply a packaging mistake.
The 3D Blu-ray was released today in the UK and purchasers have discovered that it is just the standard version of the movie in 3D and not the IMAX one.
This means there is no way to see the IMAX version of Avengers: Infinity War at home, and not even the international digital copies that people think are the IMAX aspect ratio really are. Those full-frame versions of the movie on digital download services in countries such as Russia are actually using the broadcast version of the movie. That means that while, yes, it does include more information at the top and bottom of the screen, it’s cropped at the sides. The actual IMAX version would still have small black bars at the top and bottom of the screen in order to avoid cropping information on the sides of the frame.
Sadly it doesn’t look like we’ll see a home version of the IMAX version of Avengers: Infinity War as this isn’t the sort of thing Disney would listen to an online petition for.
