WARNING: This article will contain spoilers for the post-credits scenes in Ant-Man and The Wasp. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, come back to this once you have!
While Ant-Man and The Wasp doesn’t have much to do with Avengers: Infinity War in the movie itself, the two post credit scenes most definitely do. And if you listen carefully to what the dialog in the first scene says, it also drops a huge hint at where things are going in Avengers 4…
Prior to Scott Lang entering the miniaturized Quantum Tunnel that’s in the back of Luis’ van, Janet van Dyne is giving him some advice about the Quantum Realm due to spending thirty years in there. One thing she tells Scott to avoid in there is the Time Vortex as they can’t rescue him if he goes into that.
The rumors of the Avengers 4 plot say that Scott Lang and Tony Stark travel in time via a piece of technology that Hank Pym invented. Hank Pym invented the Quantum Tunnel, and via that they’re able to access the Quantum Realm where there’s such a thing as a Time Vortex inside? Those two words being spoken in the post credit scene is a pretty blatant hint at where things are going. Janet says it looking right at the camera. It couldn’t have been a bigger hint if she winked at the camera while saying it.
Another part of the Avengers 4 plot rumor has to do with Scott Lang. When the stuff about him and Tony traveling through time first crossed our path, another part of it said that Scott would be the audience’s introduction to the world after the snap in Infinity War.
Ant-Man and The Wasp‘s post credit scene seems to confirm that as well. If the rumors are correct, that would mean that Scott Lang will spend several years trapped in the Quantum Realm before either finding his way out or someone turning the machine back on in the real world. It’ll then be through his point-of-view that audiences will experience how Thanos’ actions changed the world.
It also goes back to the Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s “All Good Things…” inspiration for the movie, as that episode dealt with a bad future that was prevented through some time manipulation. In Avengers 4 they’ll prevent the terrible future where half of the life on Earth was turned to dust by using the Time Vortex inside the Quantum Realm to travel through time, set things right, and defeat Thanos that way.
With this post-credits scene, and if the rumors are true, we’re starting to get a good idea of how Avengers 4 may begin. It’s not how some people on the internet want to see it go, most fan theories on Reddit are about the movie picking up immediately after Infinity War, but it’s the one the makes the most storytelling sense. You don’t need to show the events immediately following the snap, you just need a surrogate for the audience to see how bad the future is due to that and thanks to Ant-Man and The Wasp it looks like Scott Lang will be that character.
