Those who have been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe over its last ten years know how Marvel likes to use the comics to help promote upcoming movies. Generally if they’re introducing a new character or team, you’ll see a push for them in comics beginning at least eighteen months from the movie release. That’s why Marvel is reprinting Neil Gaiman’s The Eternals this August and they’re being mentioned in the comics again.
Today Marvel’s September 2018 solicitations came out and there’s another big reprint that should catch your eye. They’re issuing a new printing of Avengers Forever.
This is interesting because Avengers Forever tells the story of the team traveling through time and encountering different versions of the Avengers in different time periods, which is what the plot of Avengers 4 is rumored to deal with.
An even bigger Avengers 4 clue is that Comicbook.com asked the Russo Brothers about the movie being titled “Avengers Forever” and they said:
“However, they do admit that ComicBook.com’s guess of “Avengers: Forever” is the closest anyone has come to get the title right. Joe Russo then went on to joke about just how close this title guess actually was: “The actual title is The Avengers: Almost Forever.””
The original Avengers Forever story line was twenty years ago in the comics, so this December would mark the 20th anniversary of the release. It’s just awfully convenient that Marvel is reprinting the series in the lead up to a movie that may have similar themes to it.
