For a long time there was a big rumor that there would be a five-year jump between the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. Some people think this is very cool and opens up all sorts of awesome story possibilities for where the MCU is years after 4.5 billion people turn to dust. Others resist the idea because they want to see Avengers 4 pick up right where the last one left off. Personally, I hope the time jump is real since that sounds a lot more interesting.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, the Russo Brothers strongly hint at something like a time jump:
“Here’s the thing, I think it’s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe],” Anthony said. “Just because there’s a sequel on the books doesn’t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. There’s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go from here.”
“There’s four years between ‘Guardians 2’ and ‘Infinity War.’ That’s a long time, and a lot of ‘Guardians’ stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.”
While people think they’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn recently confirmed the movie is set after the events of the two Avengers movies:
I’ve been free to do what I want. I WILL have to deal with the events of Avengers 3 & 4, but then I’m free to go where I want from there.

But what they say remains true, just because it’s a sequel it doesn’t mean that it has to pick up immediately following the first movie. That means that the rumor of Avengers 4 picking up five years after Infinity War could actually be true…
