This has been stated multiple times, even on this site, but since people are still coming up with elaborate conspiracy theories involving when Marvel Studios doing Hall H at San Diego Comic Con next month…it needs to be laid out yet again how they are not participating this year.
Due to the production schedules of the current Phase 3 movies and the fact that Hall H at SDCC is next month, Marvel is skipping it this year. That means there’s not going to be any Captain Marvel trailer wowing the crowds, and no preview of Avengers 4 for people to film with their cell phone for some brief internet fame. Kevin Feige flat-out said they are not doing Hall H this year to Screenrant:
We’re going to do um, of course, Marvel will have a presence there.Marvel Studios will have a presence there only in that there will be 10th-anniversary materials and a 10th-anniversary panel. Not doing Hall H this year”
I’ve already had people trying to “call me out” on Twitter claiming that Feige was lying or that there would be a surprise panel, likely because they’ve hyped themselves up in their head for a Marvel Studios Hall H panel next month and can’t deal with the truth. But the truth of the matter is that Hall H is the most prime real estate in all of SDCC and the spots are set months in advance. When Marvel Studios didn’t claim a spot in Hall H this year, whatever time they would’ve had went to a different studio. Comic-Con can’t just take away that other studio’s spot and give it to Marvel Studios for a surprise panel.
As for the 10th Anniversary thing, that’s going to be in a much smaller room probably at the same time as something really big in Hall H. It’s going to feature some behind-the-scenes stuff from the past ten years, and be a way for them to promote the 10th Anniversary book that’s coming out later this fall.
But a big Hall H Marvel Studios blow-out not happening this year, and Kevin Feige explained to Den of Geek why it isn’t:
“That’s one of the main reasons we’re not going to Hall H this year,” he continues, “is because Ant Man & the Wasp will have just been released, Infinity War will be out, Captain Marvel will have just finished filming, Spider-Man will have just started filming, and we’re not gonna be making any other announcements. So we’re gonna wait until Comic-Con next year.”
Of course when people hear they won’t be at SDCC in Hall H, they immediately think that Kevin Feige will do a special Phase 4 event like they did for Phase 3, and he explained that won’t be the case either to The Playlist:
” We did a big event a couple of years ago where we announced like ten movies between 2014 and 2019 and we haven’t delivered all of those yet and we haven’t delivered the promise when we made that really big deal of announcing all those movies. And so now to make a big deal of ‘even more movies, before the movies that we already announced!’ doesn’t seem like the right thing to do.”
That’s why they’re waiting for SDCC 2019 to make any announcements for the next Phase.
And no, they aren’t saving anything for D23 Expo as there’s no D23 Expo in 2018. Unlike SDCC, that convention is only held on odd-numbered years. They next D23 Expo is in August of 2019, a month after SDCC 2019 where Marvel will reveal their Phase 4 slate.
