Even before the release of Ant-Man and The Wasp, a lot of Marvel fans are desperate to get their first real look at Carol Danvers in the MCU. Sure there are blurry set photos out there, but fans want to see what she’s really going to look like in the movie. Well, if this rumor is true they may not have to wait too long.
Over the last week I’ve heard from multiple people that there is a version of a Captain Marvel teaser trailer already cut and likely making its way through Disney’s marketing machine. There’s no word when the teaser could be released, but there’s some evidence to give clues.
You’re going to see people immediately claiming that since they’re still filming the movie it’s impossible to make a trailer, but that’s simply not true at all. With the way modern Marvel movies are made these days, effects are done during filming as scenes are completed. It’s the only way they’re able to film a movie twelve months out and still hit a release date.
It’s also not uncommon for a trailer to be cut and then not released for a few months. The first teaser for Solo: A Star Wars Story was apparently ready back in November of 2017, but we didn’t see it until the Super Bowl (despite people trying to debunk that before it happened). Maybe if that trailer came earlier the movie would’ve done better…
So when will it hit? Lets look at a couple of things:
- It’s not “too early”: Marvel’s Black Panther hit theaters in February of this year, but the first teaser trailer for that arrived in June of 2017 during the NBA Finals.
- Marvel Studios is not at SDCC this year: There is no big Hall H panel for Marvel Studios at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, so they aren’t saving anything for a panel that doesn’t exist in 2018.
- There’s no D23 Expo in 2018: Like SDCC, Marvel Studios isn’t holding anything for D23 this year because there is no D23 this year. The next D23 Expo isn’t until August of 2019, five months after the release of Captain Marvel.
With those out of the way, the question still remains when people will get their first look at it.
This coming week is a big European theater exhibitor convention, much like CinemaCon in the US, called CineEurope. This is what that leaked Avengers 4 promo art was produced for. Disney is making their big presentation to the convention on Wednesday, and it’s possible the attendees there will get their first sneak peek at Captain Marvel.
As for when the public could see the teaser, that’s unknown. Marvel Studios is releasing Ant-Man and The Wasp on July 6th and they do traditionally like to have a teaser or trailer for the next movie playing with whatever is in theaters at the time, but right now there’s no evidence (yet) that we’ll see it then.
