We know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is likely going to be the May 2020 release for Marvel Studios, but now we know when filming will begin on the movie and where it falls in the MCU time line.
Chris Pratt told MTV during the promotion for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom that he’ll be filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in January when asked what Star-Lord is doing between the two Avengers movies:
“I’m slated to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in January so we don’t know yet, time-wise, where that lines up. I’m hoping it’s not the last you see me, but I can’t be sure.”
Some people took his comments as a clue that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be set before the two Avengers movies, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. During a Twitter Q&A the other day, James Gunn said that he will have to deal with the events in the two Avengers movies with where Guardians 3 goes:
I’ve been free to do what I want. I WILL have to deal with the events of Avengers 3 & 4, but then I’m free to go where I want from there.

If the events of Avengers 3 and 4 affects what he’s doing with the story, then it means the movie is probably set after those.
