There’s a rumor picking up steam this morning, and based on the origin of it you really shouldn’t believe that Jake Gyllenhaal is Mysterio in the Spider-Man sequel just yet.
The rumor comes from the British tabloid The Sun, and for those in the US they’re about as reliable as the National Enquirer. But since many film blogs and fan sites don’t know that, they’re running the story that Jake Gyllenhaal is Mysterio as if it’s really going to happen. British tabloids just print whatever BS they come up with to fill out the text on the page and 99% of the time it’s completely bogus.
Would Mysterio be great in the Spider-Man sequel? Of course. Like Vulture, he’s one of the classic villains that Sony didn’t use in either of the original two Spider-Man series so it’ll be a fresh villain to use in the MCU and one I think fans would be very happy to see on the big screen even if it isn’t Bruce Campbell in the part as Sam Raimi would’ve done.
So until a legitimate Hollywood trade such as The Hollywood Reporter, The Wrap, Variety, or Deadline reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is Mysterio in Spider-Man 2, hold off on believing this rumor for now.
