Inhumans is Officially Cancelled, But What About Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Today ABC officially cancelled Inhumans, to the surprise of absolutely no one, but one thing missing in the group of shows that the network cancelled was Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. leaving fans wondering what’s going on with the series. While there were whispers earlier this month that it was renewed for a sixth season, nothing ever came from that and right now fans of the show are in limbo wondering what’s going to happen to it.

Tonight a source of mine who has been reliable in the past let me know what may be going on behind the scenes with the show. This should be considered a rumor until ABC officially announces what’s going to happen, but it doesn’t sound too dire right now if this pans out.

It sounds like they are considering a couple of things for a sixth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

  1. The first option is a short 10-episode mini-season on ABC or even possibly on Hulu.
  2. The second option is to further cut down the number of episodes to 15 or 16 (this season was 22) and to continue to reduce the budget that way.
  3. A third option isn’t as clear as those, as it seems like there may be an idea for some kind of “spinoff” featuring some of the characters on a much smaller scale than the regular series.

The key thing with these options is that they don’t want to lose the small but extremely loyal following of these characters. That’s why there hasn’t yet been a concrete announcement, but the side effect of this is that it’s very frustrating for the cast who can’t really schedule other projects for next fall in the chance that the show isn’t renewed.

Hopefully we’ll hear something official soon, but right now the show isn’t finished just yet. We just need to keep our fingers crossed.
