Over the last month, people on the internet have been obsessing over a hoax that claimed Silver Surfer would appear in Avengers: Infinity War.
The origin of the hoax came from a cast listing on MetaCritic (which anyone can edit, just like IMDB) that claimed an actor no one ever heard about was playing Silver Surfer in Infinity War. The actor cashed in on this attention by Tweeting hints at Silver Surfer and making his Twitter header into a Silver Surfer image. Obviously the internet took this as confirmation that the 20th Fox-owned Marvel character would be appearing in a MCU movie that was written and filmed long before Disney decided to purchase Fox.
While most people who understood how these things work knew that Silver Surfer wouldn’t be showing up in Infinity War, now we have the final confirmation that it was just a fan hoax. Yahoo UK asked the Russo Bros about the Silver Surfer rumor, and they said:
“I don’t think we own Silver Surfer,” Joe Russo says. “But it’s fan-wish fulfillment and, you know, if this Disney-Fox deal goes through there’s going to be a lot more characters coming into the Marvel universe, so some of those crazy fan theories might come true.”
So there you have it. Silver Surfer is not in Infinity War because Disney does not own the character. But if the Disney-Fox deal completes, there is obviously the chance of Silver Surfer appearing in the MCU in the future…
