The Confusion About Infinity War and Avengers 4

A lot of people are expressing confusion about whether or not Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 are still two parts of the same story or if the second movie is the start of something new. Some are confused, wondering if Infinity War is the end of this Avengers story or wondering if they’re still telling the story of Thanos and the Gauntlet next May. So I’m going to try to explain it clearly, while dancing around spoilers for those who are unfamiliar with the Infinity Gauntlet.

Marvel first announced the two-part Avengers sequel in October of 2014 as part of their big Phase 3 presentation. Both movies were written as a two-parter, and they were still filmed back-to-back over the majority of 2017. But the change to the titling came in 2016, and there may have been another reason behind it.

The original news of the two movies being “very different” came from Uproxx way back in May of 2016:

“The movies are two very different movies,” answered Joe.

I then asked if it’s misleading having them labeled as “Part 1” and “Part 2”

“It is misleading,” said Anthony.

Joe added, “The intention is we will change it, we just haven’t come up with the titles yet. But, yes, we will change it. And, yes, that is a scoop: we will retitle them.”

What a lot of people are missing with this is that when they decided to not call them Part 1 and Part 2, the young adult movie adaptation bubble was bursting. After Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games movies split their final movie into two parts; the Divergent series fell on its face. The Divergent movie Allegiance released in March of 2016 and flopped hard. The second part of the movie would be cancelled and become a TV series or something.

Two months after that flop, the Russo Bros revealed that the two-part Avengers movie would not be “Part 1” and “Part 2” anymore. Marvel Studios wanted to get as far away from being perceived as following the “split final movie in two parts” fad as possible.

That doesn’t mean the story was changed. The movies were still written as two parts of one story. And to not spoil those who aren’t familiar with Infinity Gauntlet, the universe is a much different place due to what Thanos does and as such the second movie would be very different than the first. The heroes in the second movie would be living in a very different type of world, and as such it would have a different feel from what goes on in Infinity War.

So no, Infinity War isn’t some grand finale. It’s just the start of one of Marvel’s greatest and most iconic stories. So those treating Infinity War like it’s the final Avengers movie they’ll need to watch will need to start preparing for May of 2019 to get the whole story…
